#1 Extensive Reading: Best way to improve reading fluency

Abstract: This presentation introduces the theory and practice of extensive reading (ER). Extensive reading (ER) has been gaining popularity as one of the most effective reading methods across the world. The presentation will first introduce the needs and effectiveness of ER, including some former studies. Next, the presenter will show how to practice ER on learners, with emphasis on the effective way to implement ER in the classroom, showing some of her studies, which were conducted on her high school and university students in Japan.

#3 Extensive Listening for listening fluency instruction

Abstract: Extensive listening (EL) is one of the best ways to increase learners’ input though ears. In this presentation, the necessity of ample amount of listening to a whole meaningful English such as stories or news will be presented. Compared to reading skill, listening skill of Japanese students is, in general, one or two levels lower, due to lack of listening input and some problematic ways of input employed in junior and senior high school English classes. The presenter will discuss better ways of input using extensive listening, including shadowing practice, for improving listening proficiency.
